Johnny Scissor-hands

In Johnny's hands a paintbrush can do imaginative, creative things and given my own limited ability with paint and brush, I am full of admiration.  I, on the other hand, am quite good with scissors and material and over the years have helped Johnny out with bits of mending and repairs.

The repairs have been necessitated on occasion by Johnny's surgical and impatient approach to clothing alterations. I think he would make the kind of hairdresser that scalps rather than trims.  His last attempt at shortening a rather nice pair of cargo trousers reduced them to half-mast. 'You see,' said Johnny, displaying the truncated khaki legs, 'they were too long, so I cut the bottom off.  Then they were still too long, so I cut some more off - but I was bending down when I did it, so now they're too short and they still need a hem.' Hemming was to be achieved using double sided tape.  So, I took the trousers home, re-attached the severed bottoms, producing a slightly odd turn-up effect but ankle modesty was retained.

I was less than chuffed to arrive at the Studio last week to discover that scissor-hands has been at it again, this time on a Thai silk throw that yours truly had donated as a new bedspread.  'I need you to do some sewing Gill,' J informed me.  'You see, I've cut slits in it so that it will wrap around the bed posts and tuck in.  I thought that gluing them with Copydex would stop them fraying, but I don't think its going to be strong enough.'

I don't either, so the cover is back with me, quietly unravelling in its bag, whilst awaiting stitching.  'All you need to do,' said Johnny, 'is run some glue down the raw edge and then sew it with that zigzag thing.'  Next time Johnny hits a brick wall with a painting, I'm going to suggest the same remedy.  I have decided that I am not going to listen to Johnny's advice on sewing matters any more.

Reality

In a world full of such a variety of human beings, who look, behave and think differently, it follows that just as there are tall and short, black and white, there are those who live in different worlds, both mental and physical.

There are those who live in the outer physical world, the one generally agreed to be the 'real' one and those who inhabit their inner worlds of imagination and possibilities.  We all have inner worlds, maybe the difference is the amount of time we spend there.  For an artist like Johnny, it is his reality, just how he is.  Says Johnny,

‘I have been told that I do not see things the ‘right way’, that I am deluded.

Maybe I do see things differently but that is not to say wrongly - one man’s reality is another’s delusion perhaps. Art has given a purpose to my life. It has been a magical thing. Some people never experience that depth of absorption that cancels your whole being.’

Phil, Paul, Johnny Bangkok 2011
In my former life as a busy professional, I had little time to spend in my imagination and when I did have time, I needed someone or something to take me there: an author; a director; an artist.  Most of us live in this ever encroaching outer world.  Now and again, someone crosses your path who lives in the world of imagination and possibilities.  Johnny and brothers Paul and Phil are the ones who crossed mine.  Life has not been the same!

Studio News

'I had to be rescued today,' said Johnny. 'I was stuck in the Studio - stuck!  You know my door sticks - I didn't know whether I was locked in or stuck in - so I went and got the key.  I was stuck in!  It's lucky Toby (son) is next door, so I rang him and between us - he shoved and I heaved and we got it open.'

Johnny thinks he might have emailed Tony Pony last Friday.  'I'm not sure I have his current email,' he recounted.
'Well, didn't you just use 'reply'?' I enquire.
'No, because I'm not sure I have his address.'
...

So Tony, if you read this, please email Johnny ... This is turning into one of those pauses in conversation.

And things have changed on the Brasserie wall ....  from last week:

To this week:

I miss:

 and

but,' Know your place' (very apt for a restaurant, I think):

Know your place

Kimono

and 'Kimono':

are still in place.

But for how long?  Who knows?

Dig it While it's happening

TGIF

Dig it!
Always a delight to be with friends - bit of a downer for three of us tonight on the work front.  I won't go into detail, but enough to say that when livelihoods are threatened, it causes sudden shifts in perspectives:  worries; what ifs.

Johnny's take - I have no future, I have a past.  I don't know what tomorrow will bring, how I'll feel - all we have is the present - dig is while it's happening.
